While some reviews did laud Swift’s latest offering, the album failed to dazzle a healthy branch of critics. Had Swift’s run as a brilliant pop star finally run its course? It was with those reviews in mind that I hit play last Friday afternoon and visited “The Tortured Poets Department” for myself. Initially, “Tortured Poets” failed to resonate with me. That is because it takes more than a day to get one’s arms around a 31-track album like “Tortured Poets.” Swift’s album demands time to be fully appreciated.

That's certainly true of her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," which arrived last Friday to mixed reviews. New Taylor Swift music is bound to spark widespread debate, but the conversation swelled when she surprise-released "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," a deluxe edition with 15 extra songs. Indeed, most of these deluxe tracks succeed as self-contained stories, recalling the mythic peaks of "Folklore" and "Evermore." Then again, more songs equals more streams, and "The Tortured Poets Department" is on target to become one of the most-played albums of the streaming era. "It resonates with both millennials and Gen Zers, which I think indicates that Gen Z is feeling the same 'girl-boss' pressures that millennials famously grew up with," said Casey Lewis, a social media trend forecaster. "I'm a millennial and I grew up like I needed to maximize every minute of the day," Lewis said. And yet, even in cases where women are now breadwinners, the division of labor at home has barely budged, the Pew report found. "But we also live in an environment of layoffs and rising costs, so not being productive isn't really an option," she added. Even though you're not reading the news, you're still seeing how the economy is impacting peers.

The album follows Swift's breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn, her longtime muse and collaborator. Alwyn likely earned millions from the six songs he cowrote with Swift. CNN —Taylor Swift released “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, a 31-track surprise double album, and she’s clearly in an emotionally evolved era. CNN —Friday’s midnight release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” Taylor Swift’s 11th album, means that yet another era has begun — and a record-breaking one at that. I am one of them, and the anticipation — along with the revelry — has been an extended family affair. Swifties dug into Taylor math, which often revolves around the number 13, the date of her December birthday. Final Grade: 8.4/10"The Tortured Poets Department" includes 16 standard-edition tracks. We don't listen to Swift's music because it necessarily is true. Corny as some moments may be, this is a marvelously deranged pop album. If there has been a common thread — an invisible string, if you will — connecting the last few years of Taylor Swift’s output, it has been abundance. Her last LP, “Midnights” from 2022, rolled out in multiple editions, each with its own extra songs and collectible covers. What Swift reveals on her sprawling and often self-indulgent 11th LP, “The Tortured Poets Department,” is that this stretch of productivity and commercial success was also a tumultuous time for her, emotionally. — there was a second “volume” of the album, “The Anthology,” featuring 15 additional, though largely superfluous, tracks. Gone are the character studies and fictionalized narratives of Swift’s 2020 folk-pop albums “Folklore” and “Evermore.” The feverish “Tortured Poets Department” is a full-throated return to her specialty: autobiographical and sometimes spiteful tales of heartbreak, full of detailed, referential lyrics that her fans will delight in decoding.

Swapping distinctive friendship bracelets, often featuring the names of Swift songs and albums or the names of the fans themselves, has become one of the rituals associated with attending an “Eras” tour concert. CVS, which owns health insurer Aetna, on Wednesday slashed its full-year profit outlook, citing the potential for higher medical costs to bite into its profits. Last month, Humana said it saw an even bigger jump in medical costs in the fourth quarter. Higher medical costs may be a larger problem for Humana than they are for CVS and other insurers. They added that there is no other part of Humana's business that could meaningfully dampen the hit from higher medical costs on the insurance side. Another insurance giant that has been seeing higher medical costs, UnitedHealth Group, also has large health-care services and pharmacy operations that diversify its earnings streams.
